A hatchback refers to small utilitarian car type that features an upward opening hatch door type that is hinged at the level of its roof and has a small boot (trunk).

Most have a two-box design (like station wagons) where there is a shared interior volume for cargo and passengers when compared with sedans for instance.

To visualize them, think of the Nissan Tiida, Toyota Vitz or Ractis, Renault Kwid, Kia Forte, Hyundai i10, Maruti Alto among others we are going to mention.

Excluding the rear door, most hatchbacks feature four doors. However, you can find some with two doors such as the  Volkswagen Polo GTI and the MINI Cooper S 3 Door.

These vehicles should not be confused with large luxury cars, SUVs and sports cars whose doors open upwards. They are characteristically small and short.

Finally, to create more space for cargo, their rear seats can be folded down and most have means to cover or keep cargo in place such as a rigid shelf that is removable or roll-up tonneau cover for cargo.
